Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High
What it means
The engine computer has seen a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) signal voltage above the highest acceptable level, so it thinks the engine is under full load. It may add fuel and run the mixture rich; the cause is usually a lost ground or the signal wire shorted to voltage.
Symptoms4
- Check engine light on.
- Higher fuel consumption or black smoke.
- Rough idle.
- Reduced performance or hesitation on acceleration.
Possible causes5
- Open ground wire to the sensor.
- Signal wire shorted to the reference voltage or another voltage source.
- Unplugged or corroded connector on some designs.
- Failed pressure sensor.
- Disconnected sensor hose, a large vacuum leak or low engine vacuum (less common).
How to diagnose5
- Watch the sensor reading on a scan tool at idle; a value near atmospheric pressure with the engine running means either an electrical fault or genuinely low vacuum.
- Measure the ground at the sensor connector and confirm it is sound.
- Check the signal wire for a short to the reference voltage.
- Inspect the sensor hose and intake manifold for disconnection or leaks.
- Measure vacuum with a mechanical gauge if the wiring is good.
How to fix6
- Repair the open ground wire.
- Repair the short in the harness.
- Clean and reconnect the connector.
- Refit the sensor hose or repair the vacuum leak.
- Replace the pressure sensor if the circuit and vacuum are good.
- Clear the codes and confirm the sensor reading drops at idle.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low for a wire or hose repair, and reaches the upper end when the pressure sensor is replaced.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Why does fuel consumption rise with this code?
Because the high reading makes the computer think the engine is under heavy load, so it injects more fuel than needed.
Can the cause be mechanical?
Sometimes. Low vacuum from a large leak or an engine problem raises the sensor reading, so measure vacuum if the wiring checks out.
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
