What it means

The engine computer has detected higher than expected voltage or current in the fuel pressure regulator control circuit, most often from a control wire touching a voltage source or an internally shorted regulator coil. When the computer loses control of the regulator, the engine may enter limp mode with reduced power, and it may be hard to start or stall.

Hard starting, or a no-start on some vehicles.
Stalling or rough running.

Internal short in the regulator coil.
Control wire shorted to a power wire or another voltage source.
Wiring insulation damaged by engine heat or rubbing.
Fuel or moisture inside the connector.
ECU fault (rare).

How to diagnose5

Unplug the regulator and measure its coil resistance; a reading below specification means an internal short.
With the regulator unplugged and the ignition on, measure voltage on the control wire; unexpected voltage means a short to a voltage source.
Inspect the wiring along its route for damaged or melted insulation.
Check the connector for fuel, moisture or corrosion.
After the repair, command the regulator with a scan tool and watch the pressure respond.

How to fix5

Clean and reseat the connector and repair any corroded pin.
Repair broken or chafed wiring and remove any short to voltage.
Replace a blown fuse after removing the cause of the short.
Replace the pressure regulator if its coil resistance is out of specification, or the high-pressure pump if the regulator is part of it.
Clear the codes, road test and confirm pressure returns to its desired value and the code does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Does this code mean the high-pressure pump is bad?

Not necessarily. This is an electrical circuit code, and a wire or connector is often the cause. On some engines, though, the regulator is mounted on the high-pressure pump and sold with it.

Why did the code return after replacing the regulator?

Because the short may be in the wiring rather than the regulator itself. Check the control wire for a short to voltage before replacing any other part.
