What it means

The airbag control module (SRS) has detected a fault in the deployment (squib) circuit for stage 1 of the passenger frontal airbag, such as an open, a short or a resistance out of range. The airbag light comes on, and the passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash.

How to diagnose5

The technician reads the airbag control module codes with an SRS-capable scan tool and notes whether the code is current or intermittent.
Checks whether the dashboard or glove box was removed or devices were installed behind it recently.
Checks for the passenger stage 2 code too, since both together point to a shared connector or wire.
With the battery disconnected and the wait time the manufacturer specifies, inspects connectors and wiring and follows the approved test procedure.
Do not unplug or test any airbag system connector yourself, since the airbag could deploy suddenly and cause injury.

Repairs must be done by a qualified technician with the battery disconnected per the manufacturer procedure.
Reseat the passenger airbag connector or repair it if corroded.
Repair damaged wiring using the approved method for airbag circuits.
Replace the passenger airbag module if proven faulty.

Clear the codes and confirm the airbag light goes out after start-up.
