What it means

Shown as an axle with two wheels and a central circle with a lock mark, this light is amber, green or red depending on the make, and means the differential lock is engaged so both wheels turn at the same speed in sand or mud. A steady light after you engage the lock is normal; constant flashing, or the light staying on after you release the lock, usually means the lock did not engage or release or the system has a fault. A brief glow at key-on is normal.

The light flashes and never goes steady, or stays on after the lock is switched off.
Hard turning, or tires scrubbing and hopping on pavement.
A message about a drivetrain or lock fault on the display.

Possible causes6

Lock engaged by the driver, which is normal off-road.
The lock is waiting for a condition to engage or release, such as low speed, low-range four-wheel drive or a little movement to line up the teeth.
Faulty electric or vacuum/air lock actuator.
Faulty lock position sensor or switch.
Damaged wiring or connectors under the car from water or mud.
Internal wear in the locking mechanism (less common).

How to diagnose5

Check the owner's manual for the engagement conditions on your car, such as speed and gear position.
Switch the lock off and drive slowly forward and back on level ground, and see if the light goes out.
Note the message on the display and any other warning lights.
At a workshop: read codes from the drivetrain module and test the actuator, position sensor and their wiring.
Check the differential oil and its condition if there are noises.

How to fix5

Release the lock on paved roads and move the car slightly so the teeth separate.
Clean mud from the actuator and sensor connectors and repair damaged wiring.
Replace the lock switch or position sensor.
Replace the electric actuator, or repair the air or vacuum line on pneumatic systems.
Repair the internal lock mechanism if wear is confirmed, then clear codes and test engage and release.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive on pavement with the lock engaged?

It is not recommended. The lock stops the wheels turning at different speeds in turns, which makes steering hard, wears the tires and strains the drivetrain.

Why does the light flash instead of staying steady?

Usually the lock has not engaged yet and needs a little movement or a lower speed. If flashing continues, the actuator or sensor may be faulty.
