What it means

Shown as a chassis diagram with four wheels and axles, or letters such as 4WD or 4LO, green or amber depending on the make, this light means four-wheel drive is engaged. Flashing for a few seconds while shifting is normal until engagement completes; continuous flashing or a fault message means a problem in the engagement system. In normal use it is an information light.

How to diagnose5

Check the owner manual for engagement conditions, especially for low range, which usually needs a stop and Neutral.
If the indicator flashes, roll the car slowly forward and back a short distance to help engagement.
Do not drive part-time 4WD on dry pavement on systems that do not allow it.
At the workshop: read 4WD codes and test the shift motor and front hubs.
Check the transfer case and differential fluid level and condition.

Re-engage the system following the correct steps in the owner manual.
Repair the connector or wiring to the shift motor.
Replace the shift motor or hub vacuum lines if confirmed faulty.
Change the transfer case and differential fluid on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in 4WD on paved roads?

On part-time systems it is not recommended on dry pavement, as it strains the driveline and makes turning heavy. Full-time or automatic systems are designed for it. Check the owner manual.

The indicator keeps flashing. What should I do?

Stop, check the required conditions, then roll the car slowly a little. If it keeps flashing, there is likely an engagement fault that needs checking before driving in sand.
