What it means

Shown as a car with waves beside it, usually amber, this light has two meanings depending on where it appears: in the side mirror it is a normal alert that a vehicle is in your blind spot, and it usually flashes if you signal toward it; in the cluster with a message it usually means the system is switched off, temporarily unavailable or faulty. Behavior varies by make. A brief flash of the mirror lights at start-up is a normal self-test.

Faulty radar sensor or wiring, or a sensor needing calibration.

How to diagnose5

Note where the light is, mirror or cluster, and read the message.
Make sure the system is switched on in the vehicle settings.
Clean the rear bumper corners, where the sensors usually sit, and remove any sticker or rack covering them.
If the warning began after an accident or bumper repair, the sensor probably needs calibration.
At a workshop: read driver-assist module codes and check the sensors, wiring and calibration.

Clean the rear bumper and remove anything blocking the sensors.
Repair the sensor connector or wiring.
Calibrate the sensors with a scan tool after bumper repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rely on the system instead of checking the mirrors?

No. It is only an aid and may miss motorcycles or very fast vehicles, so always check the mirrors and over your shoulder before changing lanes.

Why did the system stop after the rear bumper was replaced?

The sensors sit behind the bumper, so any change in their position or a thick paint layer over them requires calibration, and they may need to be seated correctly in their brackets.
