IPM Malfunction or IGBT Overcurrent Protection
What it means
This code appears on Midea inverter split air conditioners with the classic code set when the IPM power module on the outdoor board detects an internal fault or overcurrent in its power transistors, and the compressor stops at once. Some Midea series use this code differently, so check the unit manual. The same code can mean something else on other brands.
Models covered: Midea residential split air conditioners with the classic display codes (E0–EC, F1–F4, P0–P4); newer Midea series use different codes (EH, EL, PC) and some models differ.
Symptoms4
- The compressor stops moments after starting.
- No cooling while the indoor fan keeps running.
- The unit may run for a while, then repeat the code in heat or at low voltage.
- A faint burning smell from the outdoor unit in severe cases.
Possible causes6
- Loose or burnt compressor leads or their connector on the outdoor board.
- Weak or fluctuating supply voltage.
- IPM overheating from dust on the heat sink or poor outdoor ventilation.
- Compressor overload from a dirty condenser or weak outdoor fan.
- Failed IPM or outdoor board.
- Shorted or mechanically tight compressor.
How to diagnose5
- Switch off at the breaker for several minutes, restart once and note when the code shows.
- Clean the outdoor unit and check its fan spins.
- The technician measures supply voltage during the start attempt.
- After discharging the outdoor board, the technician checks the compressor leads and measures the windings and insulation.
- The technician tests the IPM per the Midea procedure and decides whether the board or the compressor is at fault.
How to fix5
- Clean the condenser and heat sink and improve ventilation.
- Repair the compressor leads and connector.
- Fit a voltage protector or upgrade the supply cable.
- Replace the outdoor board at an authorized service center.
- Replace the inverter compressor if shorted or tight, then run and monitor the current.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The range starts at wiring or cleaning and reaches a new outdoor board or inverter compressor at the top.
Prices are rough estimates including the part and the technician’s fee, and vary with brand, model and part source.

Frequently asked questions
Is P0 always a board fault?
No. The compressor, its leads and the voltage can cause it too, and fitting a new board before testing the compressor can damage the new board.
Can I test the board myself?
No. The inverter board holds a dangerous voltage after switch-off; testing it is for a qualified technician.

What was wrong? (optional)
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
