What it means

This code appears on some LG refrigerators with a digital display and an ice maker, and means the main board is reading an impossible value from the ice maker's temperature sensor (thermistor) or its compartment sensor. Without a correct reading, the ice maker cannot tell when the water has frozen, so ice output drops or stops. Food cooling usually stays normal; the same code can mean something else on other brands.

Models covered: LG refrigerators with a digital display (e.g. side-by-side, French door and top-freezer models); the code shows as Er plus two letters.

Er IS shows on the refrigerator display.
The ice maker makes no ice or very little.
Water may come out instead of ice, or cubes are not fully frozen.

Loose or corroded ice maker connector from moisture.
Failed ice maker sensor, open or shorted.
Broken ice maker wiring, especially wires running through the door hinge.
Failed ice maker assembly, which includes the sensor on some models.
A fault in the sensor input circuit on the main board.

How to diagnose5

Unplug the refrigerator for a few minutes and plug it back in; if the code returns, the fault is real.
Make sure the ice maker is switched on in the settings and that the door and ice compartment cover close properly.
Empty the ice bin and remove any stuck cubes blocking movement.
A technician unplugs the refrigerator before removing the ice maker, then measures the sensor resistance against the LG specification.
The technician checks the connector and wiring, then decides between a new sensor, a new ice maker assembly or checking the main board.

Clean and reseat the ice maker connector, or repair the wiring.
Replace the sensor if it is a separate part on your model.
Replace the ice maker assembly if the sensor is built into it or the assembly has failed.
Replace the main board only after the sensor and wiring are confirmed good.
