What it means

This code appears on LG refrigerators with a digital display and means the main board is reading an impossible value from the temperature sensor (thermistor) in the freezer compartment, usually because the sensor or its connection is open or shorted. The refrigerator may keep cooling on an estimated basis, but the freezer temperature may not be controlled, which affects frozen food; the same code can mean something else on other brands.

Models covered: LG refrigerators with a digital display (e.g. side-by-side, French door and top-freezer models); the code shows as Er plus two letters.

Er FS shows on the refrigerator display.
Frozen food is softer than usual, or the freezer is colder than needed.
The compressor runs non-stop or at irregular intervals.
The freezer temperature setting on the display has little effect.

Loose or corroded sensor connector from moisture and frost.
Failed freezer compartment sensor, open or shorted.
Broken or pinched sensor wire.
Frozen water reaching the sensor area after ice buildup.
A fault in the sensor input circuit on the main board.

How to diagnose5

Unplug the refrigerator for a few minutes and plug it back in; if the code returns, the fault is real.
Put a thermometer in the freezer to watch the real temperature until the repair.
Keep the freezer door closed as much as possible and check that its gasket seals.
A technician unplugs the refrigerator before opening any cover, then measures the sensor resistance against the LG temperature-resistance table.
The technician checks the connector and wiring; if they and the sensor are good, the main board is at fault.

Dry, clean and reseat the sensor connector.
Repair a broken or pinched sensor wire.
Replace the freezer compartment sensor with the correct part for the model.
Replace the main board only after the sensor and wiring are confirmed good.
Run the refrigerator and check with a thermometer that the freezer temperature is steady without the code returning.
