What it means

This code appears on LG inverter split air conditioners and on LG ducted and cassette units that use CH codes. It means the current sensor (CT) in the outdoor unit measured an input current from the supply above the allowed limit, so the unit stopped the compressor for protection. The cause is usually overload on the compressor or low supply voltage, and sometimes a board fault. The exact wording can vary between outdoor unit generations, and the same code can mean something else on other brands.

Models covered: LG inverter split air conditioners (e.g. Dual Inverter) and LG ducted/cassette units that use CH codes; the code shows as CH plus a number on the display or as LED blinks.

Symptoms4

  • CH22 shows and cooling stops, especially during the hottest hours.
  • The unit runs for a while, stops, restarts after a few minutes, then stops again.
  • The breaker may trip at the same time as the code.
  • Cooling is clearly weak before the code appears.

Possible causes6

  • Dirty condenser or blocked airflow at the outdoor unit, raising operating pressure and current.
  • Low or unstable supply voltage, or loose power connections that raise the current.
  • Refrigerant overcharge or air in the system after an incorrect recharge.
  • Weak or stopped outdoor fan.
  • Faulty current sensor or measuring circuit on the outdoor PCB.
  • A worn compressor drawing more current than normal.

How to diagnose5

  1. Switch off the breaker for several minutes and make sure the outdoor unit is clean and unobstructed.
  2. Note whether the code shows only in extreme heat or when other large loads run on the same line.
  3. A technician measures supply voltage with the compressor running, and measures actual current against the unit nameplate.
  4. Check condenser cleanliness, outdoor fan operation and refrigerant pressures per LG specification.
  5. If actual current is normal but the code still shows, check the current sensor and its circuit on the outdoor PCB.

How to fix6

  1. Wash the condenser, clean the outdoor unit and give it good ventilation.
  2. Fix loose connections and fit a voltage protector if the supply is weak or unstable.
  3. Correct the refrigerant charge after evacuating and weighing in the right amount (licensed technician).
  4. Repair the outdoor fan or replace its motor.
  5. Replace the outdoor PCB if current sensing is faulty, or the compressor if it is proven to draw excess current.
  6. Run the unit at peak time and confirm current is within specification and the code does not return.

Repair cost

In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.

Many cases are fixed with an outdoor unit wash or voltage correction at moderate cost; an outdoor PCB costs more, and a compressor replacement is the top of the range.

Prices are rough estimates including the part and the technician’s fee, and vary with brand, model and part source.

Frequently asked questions

Is CH22 linked to weak power supply?

Often yes. Low voltage makes the unit draw more current to keep its output, which can push it past the limit and set the code.

Is a wash enough?

If the condenser is heavily clogged with dust, a wash can solve it completely; if the code returns after washing, current, voltage and pressures must be measured.

This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
