What it means

This code appears on Fujitsu General split and ducted units on the wired remote or indoor display; older models show it as a number of indicator lamp blinks instead of a number. It means the discharge temperature sensor measured a truly high temperature of the gas leaving the compressor, above the protection limit, so the unit stopped the compressor until it cools. The most common causes are low refrigerant or a restriction in the circuit, and the unit may lock out if the code repeats. The same number can mean something different on other brands.

A dirty outdoor coil or poor airflow in extreme heat.

How to diagnose5

Switch off at the breaker, let the unit cool, and clear the area around the outdoor unit.
Recall whether cooling faded gradually, a typical sign of low refrigerant.
The technician measures refrigerant pressure and discharge pipe temperature against the manufacturer specification.
The technician looks for a leak, confirms the service valves are open and checks the expansion valve.
The technician compares the discharge sensor reading with the actual pipe temperature to rule out a sensor error.

How to fix5

Fully open the service valves if they were partly closed.
Wash the outdoor coil and improve airflow around the outdoor unit.
Repair the leak and recharge refrigerant by weight; this is work for a licensed technician.
Replace a blocked expansion valve or filter, or the sensor if proven wrong.
Replace the compressor at an authorized service center if it is damaged, then confirm the code does not return.

Only after the leak is repaired. Topping up without a repair brings the code back and risks the compressor.

What is the difference between A1 and code 71?

Code 71 means the sensor itself has failed. A1 means the measured temperature is really high, and the cause must be found in the refrigerant circuit.
