Sensor Reference Voltage "A" Circuit High
What it means
The engine computer (ECU) found that the reference voltage on circuit A, shared by several sensors, is higher than normal. This usually happens when the reference wire touches another wire carrying higher voltage, such as a battery feed, and it can damage the connected sensors.
Symptoms4
- Check engine light on with high-voltage codes for several sensors.
- Limp mode and reduced power.
- Illogical sensor readings on the scan tool.
- Occasional hesitation or hard starting.
Possible causes5
- Reference wire shorted to a power feed or higher voltage source in the harness.
- Moisture inside a connector bridging the reference pin and a neighboring power pin.
- Internal failure in one of the sensors sharing the circuit.
- Incorrect previous wiring repair or non-original accessories.
- Faulty reference voltage supply inside the engine computer.
How to diagnose5
- Measure the reference voltage at the sensor connectors with the key on and compare with the manufacturer specification.
- Unplug the shared sensors one at a time and watch whether the voltage drops to normal.
- Inspect the harness for melted insulation or wires rubbing together.
- Inspect connectors for moisture or corrosion between pins.
- Disconnect the computer connector and check for voltage on the reference wire from an outside source.
How to fix6
- Separate the shorted wires and repair their insulation.
- Clean moisture and corrosion from the connector or replace it.
- Replace the internally failed sensor.
- Remove non-original repairs or accessories causing the short.
- Replace and program the engine computer only if the excess voltage is proven to come from it.
- Clear the codes and confirm the reference voltage is normal and the code does not return.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low for a wiring short or connector repair, and rises if sensors were damaged by the high voltage or the computer must be replaced.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Can high reference voltage damage the sensors?
It can if it continues, because sensors are designed for a specific reference voltage, so repair the short quickly and then check sensor readings.
What is the most common cause?
The reference wire shorted to a power wire in the harness through heat or chafing, or moisture in a connector bridging two neighboring pins.
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
