What it means

The engine computer has detected an improper signal from the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor. The computer uses this reading to run the compressor and fans and to adjust idle speed, so it usually switches the A/C off to protect it.

Symptoms4

A/C does not cool because the compressor does not engage.
Cooling fans run constantly or do not run with the A/C on some vehicles.
Idle speed changes when the A/C is switched on.
Check engine light on.

Failed A/C refrigerant pressure sensor.
Open or shorted sensor wiring.
Corroded or loose connector, especially as it sits near the front of the vehicle exposed to water and dust.
Fault in the reference voltage circuit shared by this and other sensors.
Abnormal refrigerant pressure in the system, either very low or too high.
Engine computer fault (rare).

How to diagnose5

Watch the refrigerant pressure reading on a scan tool and compare it with a manifold gauge set connected to the system.
Inspect the connector and wiring between the sensor and the computer.
Measure reference voltage, ground and signal at the connector and compare with the manufacturer specification.
Check for reference voltage codes such as P0641, which mean the problem is not in this sensor alone.
If the gauges read correctly and the sensor reading is wrong, the sensor is the suspect.

Clean the connector and secure it properly.
Repair damaged wiring.
Correct the refrigerant charge if pressure is abnormal, after repairing any leak.
Replace the A/C pressure sensor, recovering and recharging the refrigerant if the vehicle design requires it.
Clear the codes, switch on the A/C and confirm the compressor and fans work.
