What it means

The engine computer has detected less vapor flow from the charcoal canister to the engine than expected when the purge valve is opened. This usually means the valve is not opening or the purge line is blocked, so vapor builds up in the canister.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between P0496 and P0497?

P0496 means purging happens more than it should, usually from a valve stuck open. P0497 means it is lower than expected, usually from a valve that does not open or a blocked line.

Can overfilling the tank cause this code?

It can. Topping off after the nozzle clicks off pushes liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, blocking it and reducing purge flow.
