What it means

The engine computer has detected that the fuel level sensor signal is above its allowed maximum. This usually means an open in the sensor circuit or its ground, or a worn resistor track that loses contact, so the fuel gauge shows a wrong reading.

Fuel gauge stuck at full or empty depending on the vehicle design.
Check engine light on.
Low fuel warning sometimes on despite enough fuel.
Risk of running out of fuel without warning.

Open sensor ground wire or a poor ground point.
Loose or corroded connector on top of the tank.
Open signal wire between the tank and the computer or instrument cluster.
Resistor track worn until it loses contact at some levels.

How to diagnose5

Watch the fuel level reading on a scan tool and compare it with the actual amount.
Check the ground at the sensor connector.
Measure the sensor resistance; an infinite reading means an internal open.
Check continuity of the signal wire to the computer or instrument cluster.
Inspect the connector on top of the tank for corrosion or looseness.

Clean or replace the connector.
Repair the ground wire or weak ground point.
Repair the open signal wire.
Replace the sensor, or the pump module it is built into, if the resistor track is damaged.
Clear the codes and confirm the fuel gauge reads correctly.

What is the difference between P0462 and P0463?

P0462 means the signal is too low, usually from a short to ground. P0463 means it is too high, usually from an open in the circuit or ground.

Why did the code appear after filling the tank?

On some vehicles the top part of the resistor track is worn or rarely used, so it loses contact when the tank is full, which points to a failing sensor.
