What it means

The engine computer has detected a fault in the fuel level sensor circuit inside the tank. This affects the accuracy of the fuel gauge and also stops the computer from running the EVAP test, which needs to know the fuel level.

Fuel gauge reads wrong, fluctuates or sticks at one value.
Check engine light on.
Low fuel warning comes on at the wrong time or not at all.
Risk of running out of fuel unexpectedly because of the wrong reading.

Worn resistor track in the fuel level sensor or a damaged float arm.
Corroded or loose connector on top of the tank.
Open or shorted wiring between the tank and the instrument cluster or computer.
Poor ground for the sensor.
Fault in the instrument cluster or the module that reads the sensor (less common).

How to diagnose5

Compare the fuel level reading on a scan tool with the actual amount in the tank.
Inspect the connector on top of the tank, often reached through a panel under the rear seat or by lowering the tank.
Measure the sensor resistance at the connector and compare it with the manufacturer specification for the current fuel level.
Check the wiring and ground between the sensor and the cluster or computer.
Check for communication codes or other faults in the instrument cluster.
