What it means

The engine computer has detected an open or short in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 8 on an engine with eight or more cylinders. The usual result is that cylinder 8 does not get its fuel, which causes a misfire in it.

Check engine light on, possibly with code P0308.
Slight shaking or stumbling at idle.
Loss of power under load.
Higher fuel consumption.

Corroded or loose cylinder 8 injector connector.
Open or shorted wire in the cylinder 8 injector harness; this area is often exposed to heat on the rear bank.
Damaged coil in the cylinder 8 injector.
Injector power problem from a fuse or relay.
Faulty cylinder 8 injector driver inside the engine computer (rare).

How to diagnose6

Locate cylinder 8 using the service information, because its numbering differs between manufacturers.
Inspect the cylinder 8 injector connector and wiring for corrosion or heat damage.
Measure the cylinder 8 injector resistance and compare it with the specification.
Check supply voltage and drive pulses at injector 8 with a noid light or an oscilloscope.
On port-injection engines, swap the cylinder 8 injector with a neighboring cylinder's injector; if the code moves, the injector is faulty.
Do not use an ordinary test light on direct-injection or diesel circuits, because they use high voltage.

How to fix6

Clean or replace the cylinder 8 injector connector.
Repair the damaged wire in the cylinder 8 injector harness and protect it from heat.
Replace a failed fuse or relay.
Replace the cylinder 8 injector if it is proven faulty.
Test or replace the engine computer only after ruling out the harness and injector.
Clear the codes, then road test and confirm the code does not return.
