What it means

The engine computer has detected an invalid signal from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, which measures the temperature of the air entering the engine. It uses a backup value, so the engine usually runs acceptably, with a small effect on fueling and ignition timing.

Occasional hard starting in very cold or hot weather.

How to diagnose5

Watch the IAT reading on a scan tool and compare it with the outside air and engine temperature after the car has sat for a long time.
A very low reading usually means an open circuit, and a very high reading usually means a short to ground.
Inspect the connector and wiring visually.
Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the manufacturer table for the temperature.
Confirm the reference voltage and ground at the connector.

Clean and reconnect the connector.
Repair the open or shorted wire.
Replace the IAT sensor if it is separate and proven faulty.
Replace the MAF sensor if the IAT sensor is built into it and proven faulty.
Clear the codes and confirm the temperature reading is logical.
