What it means

Shown as a fuel pump with a drop beside it, usually amber, this light means the sensor in the diesel filter's water separator has detected enough water to need draining. Water in diesel causes rust and wear in the high-pressure pump and injectors, which are expensive parts. A brief glow at key-on that then goes out is normal.

How to diagnose5

Check the owner's manual for where the fuel filter and drain valve are on your car.
With the engine off, drain a small amount from the bottom of the filter into a clear container and look for water settled under the diesel.
If the light returns quickly after draining, the tank itself is probably contaminated.
If no water comes out but the light stays on, check the water sensor and its connector.
At a workshop: read codes, test a fuel sample from the tank, and check the injectors and pump if there are running problems.
