What it means

A module on the network is no longer receiving messages from the power steering module, usually the electric power steering (EPS) unit on the steering column or steering gear. If the module has also lost power, steering assist may disappear and the wheel becomes suddenly very heavy, needing much more effort, especially when parking.

Blown main or signal fuse for the steering module.

Poor module ground connection.
Open or shorted CAN wiring to the module.
Internal failure of the electric steering module.

How to diagnose5

Test the battery and measure voltage while running and turning the wheel, and check alternator output.
Try to connect to the steering module with a scan tool; if it does not respond, check its large and small fuses.
Measure power and ground at the module connectors, and check that the large connector is tight with no signs of heat.
Check the CAN lines to the module and compare their resistance with the manufacturer specification.
Check for a manufacturer software update before condemning the module.

Charge or replace the battery, and repair the alternator if charging is weak.
Replace the blown fuse and repair the corroded connector or ground.
Repair damaged network wiring.
Update the module software if an update exists.
Replace the steering module, or the column or gear it is built into, then program and calibrate it with a scan tool.
Clear the codes, test the steering when parking and driving, and confirm the code does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive if the steering is heavy?

The steering still works mechanically, but it needs much more effort and can catch you out in turns. Drive a short distance at low speed to a workshop, and do not drive if you cannot control the wheel easily.

Why does the code appear after a jump start or with a weak battery?

The electric steering module is sensitive to low voltage, so it shuts itself down and drops off the network. The code often goes away after the battery or charging is fixed and codes are cleared.

Does a new module need programming?

Yes. On most vehicles a new steering module must be programmed, and the steering angle and torque sensors calibrated, with an advanced scan tool.
