What it means

This is a Toyota-specific code; other makes may use the same number for a different fault. The engine computer sends an ignition command (IGT) to the igniter, and the igniter returns a confirmation signal (IGF) when a spark occurs; this code sets because the confirmation signal did not come back as expected. The computer may cut fuel injection as a protective measure, so the engine can stumble or stall.

Models covered: Toyota models with an igniter-type ignition system, mainly 1990s to early 2000s.

How to diagnose5

Note when the fault happens (hot engine, after rain, on bumps), which points toward a coil or connector.
Inspect the igniter and coil connectors and wiring, and check the grounds.
Measure the supply voltage to the igniter or coils with the ignition on.
On coil-on-plug systems, unplug coils one at a time or use a scope to find the coil that drops the signal.
Check the IGT and IGF signals with an oscilloscope at the workshop.

Repair the faulty connector, wire or ground point.
Replace the failed ignition coil.
Replace the igniter on systems that use a separate unit.
Test or replace the computer only after all other causes are ruled out.
Clear the codes and confirm stable running under the same conditions that caused the fault.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the engine stall with P1300?

When the computer gets no spark confirmation, it may stop fuel injection to protect the catalytic converter from unburnt fuel, so the engine stumbles or dies.

Does P1300 mean the computer is bad?

Rarely. Most cases are an ignition coil, igniter, connector or ground; the computer is replaced only after all of those are ruled out.
