Electric Throttle Control Function

What it means

This is a Nissan-specific code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. It means the engine computer found that the electric throttle actuator is not opening or closing the throttle valve as commanded, so the actual valve position does not match the target. The computer then enters a fail-safe mode that limits throttle opening, so pedal response becomes weak.

• Very weak acceleration and limited response to the accelerator pedal.
• Check engine light on; the traction control light may also come on in some models.
• High or unstable idle, or stalling when stopping.
• The car will not go above a low speed in fail-safe mode.

• A loose or corroded connector at the throttle body, or a damaged wire in the motor circuit.
• A failed motor or return spring inside the throttle body.
• A fault in the throttle control motor relay or its power supply.

• A faulty engine computer (rare).

How to diagnose5

1. Read all codes and note any throttle position sensor, motor circuit or relay codes that pinpoint the faulty part.
2. Check battery voltage and terminals; low voltage can cause electronic throttle faults.
3. With the battery disconnected, inspect the throttle valve for carbon or anything blocking its movement.
4. Inspect the connector and wiring between the throttle body and the ECM.
5. Compare the target and actual throttle positions on a scan tool.

How to fix6

1. Charge or replace a weak battery and clean the terminals.
2. Clean the throttle body with a suitable cleaner without forcing the valve.
3. Repair the damaged connector or wire, and replace the relay if confirmed faulty.
4. Replace the throttle body if the motor or return spring has failed.
5. After cleaning or replacement, perform Nissan's throttle valve closed position learning and idle air volume learning.
6. Clear the codes and road test to confirm normal response has returned.
