What it means

This is a GMC manufacturer-specific code, and the same number can mean something different on other makes. The engine computer sets it when the airflow measured by the MAF sensor does not agree with the airflow expected from manifold pressure, throttle opening and engine speed. In dusty conditions the cause is often a dirty air filter or a leak in the intake duct.

Models covered: GMC models with a MAF sensor, mainly around 1999–2007 (e.g. Sierra, Yukon).

Slight lack of pull on hills or with a load.
Idle that wavers a little after start-up.
Higher than usual fuel consumption.

A clogged air filter or an air box lid that does not seal.
A vacuum hose or intake gasket leak.
An inaccurate MAP sensor reading.

How to diagnose5

Check the air filter and air box, and make sure the lid seals and there is no dust after the filter.
Squeeze and flex the duct between the MAF sensor and throttle body to find hidden splits.
Compare MAF and MAP readings on a scan tool at idle and under load with the manufacturer specification.
Review fuel trims; high trims on both banks point to unmetered air.
Have a smoke test done if no clear cause is found.

Replace the air filter, clean the air box and make sure it seals.
Replace a split intake duct or tighten the clamps.
Clean the MAF sensor with a dedicated cleaner.
Fix any vacuum leak, and replace the MAF or MAP sensor if its reading stays wrong.
Clear the codes, drive in different conditions and confirm the code does not return.
