Intake Airflow System Performance
What it means
This is a Chevrolet (GM) manufacturer-specific code, and the same number can mean something different on other makes. The engine computer (PCM) compared the MAF sensor reading with the airflow it calculates from the MAP sensor, throttle opening and engine speed, and found a larger difference than allowed. The most common cause is an air leak after the MAF sensor or a dirty sensor.
Models covered: Chevrolet (GM) models with a MAF sensor, mainly around 1999–2007 (e.g. Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban).

- A clogged air filter or dirt inside the air box.
- Poor MAF connector or wiring (less common).
How to diagnose5
- Read stored codes and freeze frame data, and note related codes such as P0171 or P0174.
- Inspect the intake duct from the air box to the throttle body for cracks or loose clamps.
- Compare the MAF reading on a scan tool at idle and higher rpm with the manufacturer specification.
- Check that the MAP reading makes sense with the engine off and running.
- Have a smoke test done if no obvious cause is found.

- Tighten the duct clamps or replace a cracked intake duct.
- Clean the MAF sensor with a dedicated cleaner and avoid over-oiling washable filters.
- Replace the leaking vacuum hose or gasket.
- Replace the MAP or MAF sensor if its reading stays out of specification after cleaning.
- Clear the codes, drive in varied conditions and confirm the code does not return.

Does cleaning the MAF sensor always fix it?
Not always. Cleaning helps when the sensing element is dirty, but if the intake duct is cracked after the sensor, unmeasured air still enters and the code returns.
Why do oiled air filters matter on a Silverado or Tahoe?
Washable filters that are over-oiled can leave a film on the MAF element, making it read low. This is a well-known cause of this code.
What is the generic equivalent?
Later models usually set the generic code P0101 for MAF performance, and P0106 may appear if the MAP sensor is at fault.
