What it means

The engine computer has detected a fault in the B signal circuit of the throttle position sensor or accelerator pedal position sensor. Electronic throttle systems use two or more signals that the computer compares for safety, so when one is lost it usually limits engine power and enters limp mode.

Check engine light on, possibly with an electronic throttle light or a reduced power message.
Very weak acceleration because of limp mode.
Unstable or raised idle speed.
Delayed or erratic response to the accelerator pedal.

Corroded or loose throttle or pedal sensor connector.
Broken or chafed wire in the B signal circuit or in the reference voltage or ground circuit.
Worn internal track in the throttle position sensor or pedal sensor.
Failed electronic throttle body assembly, which contains the sensor on many vehicles.
Engine computer fault (rare).

How to diagnose5

Use the service information to confirm which sensor carries the B signal on your vehicle, the throttle or the pedal.
Watch both sensor signals on a scan tool while slowly opening the throttle or pressing the pedal, looking for jumps or dropouts.
Wiggle the connector and wiring while watching the signal to catch an intermittent fault.
Measure the reference voltage, ground and B signal at the connector and compare them with the manufacturer specification.
Check for other reference voltage codes such as P0641, which mean the problem is in a shared circuit.

How to fix5

Clean or replace the connector and reseat it.
Repair damaged wiring in the sensor circuit.
Replace the pedal sensor if the fault is in it.
Replace the throttle body assembly if the sensor is built into it and proven faulty, then perform the throttle relearn procedure.
Clear the codes, then road test and confirm the code does not return.
