What it means

The engine computer expects a certain amount of air for each throttle opening. This code is set because the mass airflow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) reading does not agree with the throttle angle. The engine may enter a fail-safe mode that limits power until the cause is fixed.

Check engine light on.
Reduced power or limp mode.
Rough or high idle.
Hesitation on acceleration, and occasional stalling at idle.

Vacuum leak after the throttle from hoses or the intake manifold gasket.
Dirty or faulty mass airflow (MAF) sensor.
Faulty manifold pressure (MAP) sensor, or a cracked or blocked MAP hose.
Dirty throttle body or faulty throttle position sensor (TPS).
Air leak in the intake duct between the MAF sensor and the throttle.
Severely clogged air filter (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all codes; any MAF, MAP or throttle codes stored with it show which part is involved.
On a scan tool, compare MAF, MAP and throttle angle at idle and while raising engine speed, against specification or a known-good vehicle.
Inspect the intake duct and vacuum hoses, or have a smoke test done.
Check the throttle body for dirt, and watch the throttle position signal while opening it slowly.
Inspect the MAP hose and the sensor connectors for cracks or corrosion.

How to fix5

Replace the air filter if it is clogged, and tighten the intake duct connections.
Clean the MAF sensor with a dedicated cleaner, and clean the throttle body.
Replace the leaking vacuum hose or gasket.
Replace the sensor proven faulty, or the whole throttle body if its position sensor is built in.
Run the throttle relearn if the vehicle requires it, then clear the codes, road test and confirm the code does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the car go into reduced power mode?

Because the computer no longer trusts the air and throttle readings together, so it limits throttle opening to protect the engine and keep the car safe until the cause is fixed.

Is cleaning the throttle body enough?

Sometimes, if dirt is changing the airflow at a given angle. If the code returns, check for air leaks and test the MAF and MAP sensors.
